The concept is simple by the introduction of retail units that are highly mobile, ideal for temporary or temp/permanent locations the units can be dropped used then moved. Good for the exhibition circuit as well as conferences and general promotional outlets.

I could see these having many uses especially for new shopping developments as a “taster” or promotion outlets for new stores as the footprint is minimal but at the same time can offer access to a new stores stock and facilities ahead of its main building being built.

Also from a festival point of view could give access to some retailers that wouldn’t normally associate directly with event planning.

Shipping Container Store In Minglanilla,Cebu,Philippines

A barber and T-Shirt printing shop in one, a shipping container maybe the best option for many start up business units especially if leasing land as it can be dropped and then moved when you move. At the same time securely locking away your store front every night. This same location has another two shipping containers being used for other things, a bed spacer (room rental) which sees a 20ft container split into two bunk rooms and a battery and car/motorbike oil sales office. I have to admit they haven’t gone overboard on concealing the fact they are containers but then again do they have to? Here in the Philippines people generally aren’t bothered by the looks of things on the exterior and often the best seafood restaurants for example are just a BBQ and a few tables and chairs at the side of the road.

Another shipping container building in Minglanilla. This one though is a car parts business supplying things like oil and batteries. As you can see though easily slid in off the main road and its neighbour is the Gaisano Mall.

Giving it a great location for selling. A good example of a shipping container building being used as a store where they have kept the main doors to lock the unit up securely at night when the store is closed.

Another sign that shipping containers aren’t all hippy and moving more into a trend that’s becoming fashionable was the arrival of Tommy Hilfiger at the old Templehof airport in Berlin.

Put together by Artdepartment-Berlin for the Bread & Butter fashion trade show the shipping containers appear almost invisible behind all the signage and graphics which reflects the modern design and up market brand. The other side of this is it makes sense and I can see it becoming more of a trend in the exhibition and shows market as construction on site took 1 day and 3 days of outfitting which is extremely quick for something of this size.

Another step in the right direction of removing the stigma of “ugly shipping containers” to cool and modern.

Shipping container Furniture Store in São Paulo

Shipping container Furniture Store in São Paulo, bright coloured shipping container, bright coloured building

If your looking at making a statement and getting noticed Studio mk27 has been constructed on vibrant coloured shipping containers located in São Paulo’s most upmarket and trendiest neighbourhood. The shipping containers have been constructed 2 high and painted in bright fluorescent colours. The land is leased which is why the client wanted to source a movable low cost solution.

Added to this was a simple two storey high hanger using polycarbonate doors to allow opening up the store giving the feeling of space. The bright colours to give a modern and funky feel to the building is also to do with its location in the Alameda Gabriel Monteiro da Silva neighbourhood which being the last available land lot amongst a row of furniture stores it needed to make its own statement to attract customers with such stiff competition. Decameron Design needed something that had an eye catching design and utilizing shipping containers in this way with the flamboyant colours did the trick. The containers also give space to get an idea of how the furniture will fit into someone’s home due to being able to view furniture within the container units to imagine how it will fit in to the home.
