Sand Blasting And Painting Stairs For Shipping Container Home

The first photo is actually the last I took the day after, its the stairs after they have been sand blasted and painted. The others are the process at different stages. I had taken the stairs out of the apartment yesterday to get them ready for sand blasting and painting. The sandblaster hadn’t been used in over a year which resulted in it and the compressor having to be cleaned down before I could use them. By the time I had finished that it was already lunchtime and very hot, when I finally did start blasting the rain rolled in to ruin the day. It did only last twenty minutes but it then took another hour for the stairs to dry before I could give them another blast. I had tried to video what I see when sand blasting but it didn’t turn out very well so I just took the photos you see below instead. I did manage to get the stairs painted though but expect they will need touching up by the time they are dropped back into place.

I was hoping to get the wall behind the stairs covered in metal sheeting today but the best I could manage was pre drilling the holes in the sheets, This helps in getting the holes all straight and uniform.

Natural cooling for shipping container housing

plastic pipe plant tubes

As i was checking my plants recently that we are growing inside drainage pipe I came across an idea that would make a lot of sense for the side of shipping container homes. One of the reasons people get put off with the idea as a home is down to the steel external walls yet if you set up plastic pipe with plants that will hang down or even extend out around 1ft onto a trellis before growing down the trellis you could end up with a natural cooling affect that also may reduce the needs/costs of insulation. Currently I haven’t tried it as the tomato plants we are currently growing are still going up and haven’t started to hang downwards. Their location offers them up to a 6ft drop if they will grow that much as well as in full sunlight which tells me that other plants could be used for the purpose of natural cooling on a shipping container as well as using the trellis space for a cool sitting area as air should flow along inside between the trellis and container wall.

just a thought..

Painting Interior Walls – Shipping Container Home

orange / brown walls

The painting took longer than expected this orange/brown colour took three coats to get a good finish on the walls. Looking forward to it being finished completely. Going to start laying the bamboo flooring tomorrow.

Bamboo Flooring Installed In Shipping Container Home

The bamboo flooring went in pretty easily. I got sore though from carrying all the boxes upstairs. Surprising how much 750sqm of flooring weighs! I found the bamboo lumber at Lumber Liquidators and hte bathroom is Tiger Strand with everything else being Natural Strand.

The strand bamboo is also a lot harder than the vertical or horizontal boards and noticably denser. I was really happy with the finished look. Next thing is working out how to write about the wiring of the electrics in the shipping container apartment. I am hoping things will slow down once the air conditioning is installed and the trim painted. This will give me more time to update things about the details I haven’t been keeping upto date in the blog. Looking forward to a break, going on vacation Tuesday!

Electronics And Air Conditioning Installed In Shipping Container Home

Finally the air conditioning is finished and running also helps maintaining a constant temperature with the front door also being installed even though still minus its handle. Wiring has also been completed in the apartment at least. Still need to get on with caulking and painting the skirting boards before the kitchen cabinets can go in. Hopefully all this will be done by the end of the month.

intelligent light switch
After reading about a smart home system in Popular mechanics I decided to go ahead and install the system in my home by replacing some of the lighting switches around the house. Instead of having a single switch the system uses multiple switching where the switches communicate with each other around the house. Things like being able to turn on and off the garage lights from the sitting room as well as the outside lighting from the sitting room. At the same time the system also allows all the lights to be rigged to one switch so you can switch all the lights off when going out, Pretty smart stuff.

Installing Ikea Kitchen In Shipping Container Home

Ikea Kitchen installation

Eventually the kitchen installation is going in and I had heard it was difficult to put these units together but so far so good its been pretty easy. It does take time to make sure things are level and lined up but its getting there. The refrigerator is supposed to be turning up next week and I hope the kitchen is finished in time for its arrival.

When I was researching the construction of shipping container home projects I was disappointed that there was little information on the conclusion of projects and I am beginning to see why. Its the end of the project or second fix as its called in construction that is time consuming. Putting the concrete floor or the framing may seem like major steps in the construction but then seem minor milestones compared to the hassles and effort going in to installing things like flooring, kitchen cabinets or painting trim. The garage apartment is an extension of the container house and I will be getting back to that as soon as I can with some updates more frequently.

Ikea Kitchen Cabinets For Shipping Container Home

Ikea Kitchen Cabinets

The new Ikea kitchen cabinets have really finished off the kitchen, only downside was some of the parts are missing for the horizontal cupboards. This is stopping me from finishing the final installation of the glass doors for them. Ikea though are shipping the parts direct to me from Sweden and they should be here by the end of next week. The refrigerator and microwave though have arrived and I will be installing the microwave tomorrow.

Showers And Electronics For The Shipping Container Home

Not everything runs smoothly and having the microwave mounted on its brackets ready to go, plugged it in and nothing! A quick call to Best Buy and a replacement was ordered for next Wednesday giving me two delays on the project as the kitchen cabinet parts are still due from Ikea.

When I thought about tiling myself I wasn’t too keen on doing it even with instruction from a friend who is a tiler. Surprising though once the first one went on everything fell into place and by the following day it was ready to grout. It also depends how fussy you are and how much attention you put into preparation for the grout. I made sure that after tiling the cracks were free of any excess adhesive and that there was none left on the tile faces. Although once done it means you get a really good finish when you grout as there is no residue from the tile fixing to spoil it. Next job shower door and glass.

After nearly a month of rain I am hoping we can get the water and sewer trenches finished as it looks like next week is going to be dry. Then its on to the plumber doing final connections and the home is ready to move in.
